About the event

Ernest Hébert was born in Grenoble in 1817

He was a French academic painter who was mainly self-taught although he took lessons in Paris while studying Law.

His first success came with Le Tasse en prison, which depicts.

a prisoner receiving a visitor in his cell.

He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1839 and spent most of his

time between France and Italy. His most famous painting is La Mal’aria which depicts a family of Italian peasants escaping a malaria epidemic by raft, a scene inspired by events Hébert had witnessed while in Italy.

He was very sought after by the Parisian upper classes for his talent as a portrait painter. He died in 1908.
